What is Osteopathy?

Osteopathy is a form of manual medicine which predominantly focuses on the treatment of conditions affecting the musculoskeletal system including but not limited to: muscles, joints, ligaments, tendons and nerves. The underpinning principles of Osteopathy revolve around the notion that the body possesses self healing mechanisms, in which tissue structure/anatomy determines its function. Osteopaths assess conditions broadly, often looking above or below the pain site to find the root cause of your pain.

Osteopaths employ techniques such as: muscle massage/stretching, joint movement/manipulation, dry-needling as well as exercise rehabilitation to help you feel, move and stay well.

Do I need a referral to see an Osteo?

No. Osteopaths in Australia are primary healthcare practitioners which means that you are able to visit them without a referral from your doctor. Your Osteopath is however able to refer you to a doctor or other allied health services such as Imaging houses if indicated.

What do I wear to my appointment?

Please wear loose fitting, comfortable clothes to your appointment. Wear what you would to go to the gym or to exercise. It is likely that your practitioner will ask you to perform movements and exercises during your appointment.

It is common place for you to be asked by your practitioner to remove your t-shirt or pants to expose your skin as this will allow for the adequate assessment, diagnosis and treatment of your condition. Please note that you DO NOT have to remove clothing if you are uncomfortable, just speak with your practitioner!

Female clients, please wear a traditional brassiere with a clip (not sports bras/crop tops) as this will adequately expose the back for treatment and avoid damaging your clothing with massage cream.
